What do you, personally, think you will remember most about this interview a year from now?
Personally, in a year from now I think I will remember the conversation around the challenges and the opportunities presented by future pandemics and the role that cooperation can play to address global crises. It made me think about the immediate impacts that these kinds of events have on the world, and the broader implications for how we manage and respond to these crises in the future. Also, his point about needing to maybe "give up some national sovereignty" because "those issues can only be attacked on a regional or even global basis" really emphasizes the need for a united front/cooperation in dealing with global challenges. It’s like saying, hey, we’re all in this together, and sometimes we need to play as a team on the world stage to get things right.
How do you think any aspect of the interview will affect your own future or society's future?
For future impact, I think that the interview highlighted the gap between the way the world is now and how we could be, and how we could close this gap if we applied science effectively. This could inspire more action, especially among younger generations, because the need for young people to enter the profession has never been greater. He talked about the need for young people to adopt engineering roles to advance clean energy technologies, especially for developing regions that could leapfrog to cleaner solutions, as they skipped to smartphones over landlines. Overall, the big takeaway is that raising awareness and getting people involved is extremely important/key. For society’s future, there is a need for science and tech to solve global problems which could inspire more people to either jump into these fields or push for real changes. It could also mean focusing more on how AI and digital tools can help in these efforts.

After COVID-19, the immediate implications that it brought onto my personal life led me to believe that these kinds of events could only diminish the amount of global cooperation that we have now. However, this was very insightful because I can now see how these events can help us manage and respond to similar crises in the future. I watched a video centered around how human expectations influence scientific queries, and so I felt that these two videos could connect and relate to each other in terms of how we decide to investigate human behavior and the broader implications this has for our future.
